Integrating Biologic Therapies in the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer: Evidence and Current Controversies By Dr Scott Berry Innovations in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) have over the last decade have translated into substantial benefits for patients. In addition to the emergence of new cytotoxic agents, biologic agents have transformed the treatment of mCRC with the publication of practice changing randomized trials with bevacizumab (a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and monoclonal antibodies to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) cetuximab and panitumumab. For the first time in the treatment of mCRC, we have seen the emergence of an imprtant biomarker – KRAS – that helps us better select patients for treatment and start along the road of truly “personalized” treatment. The rapid emergence of new data has been accompanied by challenges in interpreting how to best use these agents most effectively for our patients. Dr Berry’s talk will review the latest efficacy, toxicity and biomarker evidence for these new targeted agents and address the key controversies that have emerged in integrating their rational use for optimal patient care. |
